Baltimore, MD

The Francis lab is at the University of Maryland, Baltimore in the Department of Psychiatry and UM-MIND. Baltimore is a charming city (aka Charm City) with a top notch scientific environment, vibrant art and music scene, and protected outdoor spaces.

Outdoors

Maryland protects its outdoor spaces leaving lots of forest to explore. This is of course so that the Chesapeake bay and all its beauty and resources are highly protected. This protection leaves lots of beautiful forest, rivers, and parks to be explored. In addition, extensive opportunities for boating, sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and more are enjoyed on rivers and the Bay. Within the city, adjacent to the historic buildings, greenspace abounds with many parks that provide recreation opportunities.

History

Baltimore has a rich history extending back to the American Revolution. The birthplace of the star-spangled banner and a central location in the American Civil war gives Baltimore historic charm. The most distinctive feature of Baltimore are it’s rowhomes. These iconic buildings extend through most major neighborhoods and can be up to 200 years old in some places.

Art

The music and art scene in Baltimore is ever thriving. You’ll find a number of free or low-priced art museums including the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum. Art galleries abound and you can purchase your very own curated art. Murals are found throughout the city, putting art on nearly every corner. Of the dozens of music venues there is bound to be a venue with your specific taste, hosting events nightly.

Life in the City

Baltimore is easy to get around and is walkable in most cases. Public transportation is efficient and simple for neighborhood to neighborhood travel. Food culture and dining is well above average in this affordable East Coast City, with lots of opportunities to try new dishes, desserts, and drinks. With Maryland’s love of it’s sports teams, you’ll be able to easily catch an O’s game at Camden Yards, or tailgate and see the Ravens play.
